“What unites Yiddish and jazz,” Salomon Schulman used to say, “is the freedom, the improvisation, and the fact that they’re both a little dirty.”
It was his love of Yiddish and jazz that brought Salomon together with Georg Riedel in the musical project Georg Riedels Jiddischland — and that same love led him to write Yiddish songs for Basia Frydman, and later for a new generation of Yiddish musicians in Sweden.
Trace “Shloyme’s” fingerprints and you find them everywhere Yiddish lives in Sweden. He translated the great Yiddish authors into Swedish, wrote his own books on Yiddish as language and culture, as resistance and survival, adapted plays and taught the language — all alongside a sharp pen as a columnist in the Swedish daily press.
This evening at Fasching is dedicated to Yiddish poet Salomon Schulman (1947–2024), who through his stories, translations, humour, and wise counsel taught a whole generation to love, argue, and sing in Yiddish in Sweden.
Sweden’s finest Yiddish musicians will be joined by actors, publishers, writers and friends. The evening closes with the world premiere of Salomon’s final Yiddish work — a book and song release.
