Mary Halvorson is one of the most influential voices on New York’s avant-garde jazz scene. Her guitar work is razor-sharp yet unpredictable: and with Amaryllis Sextet, she’s built a space where structure meets freedom, and harmony meets risk.
Now, she’s adding two saxophones to the mix, pushing the band’s sonic palette into even richer territory. Still unmistakably Halvorson: crooked melodies, sudden shifts, playful intensity. But now with extra weight and warmth in the horn section – like a new dimension opening up.
Her upcoming album About Ghosts (out June 13 on Nonesuch) also features an unexpected guest: a Pocket Piano synthesizer, gifted by a childhood friend. Halvorson had never used one before, but its ghostly tones now whisper beneath the surface, like a spectral seventh member of the band.
