Bohuslän Big Band – The Sound of Stan Getz

Stan Getz was one of jazz’s great melodists, his warm, lyrical tone so instantly recognisable that he became known simply as “The Sound.” From cool jazz and big-band years through bossa nova and the more electric currents of the 1970s, he moved through several eras of jazz without ever losing that unmistakable voice.

Bohuslän Big Band now takes on Getz’s music in a concert that spans the full range of his career: the early years with Woody Herman’s “Second Herd,” the Brazilian bossa nova of Jazz Samba and Getz/Gilberto that turned him into an international star, and the more electric collaborations with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Tony Williams in the 1970s.

Getz also had strong ties to Sweden, recording with musicians like Jan Johansson and Bengt Hallberg. That connection runs into Bohuslän Big Band’s own history too: tenor saxophonist Erik Norström was deeply influenced by Getz, and the band’s longtime bassist, Yasuhito Mori, spent a period in Getz’s own quartet.

Stan Getz would have turned 100 in 2027. Bohuslän Big Band marks the anniversary with music that still sounds as natural today as the day it was recorded.
