När Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra firade The South African Songbook skickade Wynton Marsalis en särskild inbjudan till pianisten och kompositören Nduduzo Makhathini. Det är lätt att förstå. Likaledes att Blue Note Records står som utgivare av hans senaste album Ntu. En joint venture, ty här flödar kraftfull, utvecklad post-bop som har sin basstation i 60-talets modala utforskande. McCoy Tyner och John Coltrane nämns som tongivande inspiration.
Men här finns också rastlösa repetitiva figurer, svävande harmonier och djupt rotad afrikansk spiritualjazz.
Makhathinis har släppt åtta album och erhållit ett flertal utmärkelser, bland annat ”Best jazz album” av South African Music Awards för Ikhambi (2017). Han har uppträtt på Cape Town International Jazz Festival och Essence Festival samt är medlem i Shabaka and the Ancestors. Samarbeten inkluderar artister som Logan Richardson, Nasheet Waits, Tarus Mateen, Stefon Harris, Billy Harper, Azar Lawrence och Ernest Dawkins.
Nduduzo Makhathini växte upp i umGungundlovu i Sydafrika, ett stadsnära landskap där musik och rituella praktiker var symbiotiskt sammanlänkade. Kyrkan spelade också en roll i Makhathinis musikaliska förståelse, som även innefattar ansvaret att förvalta uniciteten som gjort sydafrikansk jazz till en världsvid angelägenhet.

Nduduzo Makhathini and his band are doing serious work, drawing on his history in the Zulu tradition of ubungoma, or divine healing. You can hear him mining the soil for information, creating melodies with a centripetal pull, building rhythms that leave a listener no option but to pick up on the momentum. –
