Richard Spaven

In the fertile ground where nu jazz meets hip hop and club music, Richard Spaven has become one of the field’s most established and in-demand names. From an unassuming drum kit, the London drummer draws out tight grooves and odd meters with a finely tuned sense of pulse and space.

Over a career spanning two decades, Spaven has played alongside artists like Loyle Carner, Jordan Rakei, Petter Eldh and Alfa Mist, and worked with Flying Lotus, The Cinematic Orchestra and José James. His playing puts substance before style: technique is never the point in itself, but a way of building dynamics, movement and feeling.

On his new album Light of Day, his first for Edition Records after four self-released records, Spaven fully steps into his role as bandleader and songwriter. Co-written with Oli Rockberger, the album marks a fresh start and a new way of thinking about his music, as Spaven himself puts it.

Live, it’s a trio, with Stuart McCallum on guitar and Yves Fernandez on bass. Three instruments and plenty of air, where the groove is built from precise jazz rhythms, hip hop heft, drum and bass and the spaces in between.
