After over 30 years as a defining force in Swedish cultural life, percussionist and composer Juan Romero made his solo debut with Lua Armonia (Supertraditional, 2025).
While working on the album, Juan and his fellow musicians began exploring how free improvisation could become more inclusive and rhythmically grounded. From that process, a new musical language emerged: where folk music’s warmth and rhythms meet the openness of improvisation. With groove as the load-bearing structure and Caribbean rhythms and South American traditions as source material.
The result is an album where freely improvised passages and swinging grooves coexist and become a unifying force. “It’s important that most people — ideally everyone in the room — feels involved when music is being made,” says Romero.
