Los Angeles-based pianist, producer and composer John Carroll Kirby has collaborated with artists such as Solange, Norah Jones, Frank Ocean, Bat for Lashes, Sébastien Tellier and Harry Styles.
Growing up in California, Kirby was encouraged by his mother to take piano lessons, lessons that later led to his immersion in jazz. Kirby studied jazz orchestration and composition with John Clayton at the University of Southern California before beginning to tour with other artists.
The debut album “Travel” came in 2017 and since then Kirby has released a steady stream of records. “Septet” was released in 2021, a record inspired by the nature of the city and Kirby’s interest in animism and how it intersects with the modern urban environment. The record came about after Kirby assembled a septet for a gig at the now-defunct jazz club The Blue Whale in LA.
Welcome to an evening of ambient, cosmic music that lands between New Age and R&B in the vein of Herbie Hancock’s 70s fusion, but with softer and more cinematic edges.
