As usual, Fasching celebrates Valentine’s Day with the Trollhättan dandy Jay-Jay Johanson.

With a restrained crooner’s voice and a melancholy elegance, he has set film noir arrangements against trip-hop beats ever since his cult debut Whiskey in 1996. Fourteen more albums have followed, and Jay-Jay keeps tapping the same emotionally charged, soundtrack-like sources, with neither irony nor nostalgia.

This year he’s out with a new album, Arsenic, due in March. Recorded between Stockholm and Paris, it moves slowly and gravely, with empty space between the notes and clear echoes of 1960s film music. A Valentine’s night for the lovesick!
