Vanishing Twin

For over a decade, Vanishing Twin have built their elusive music in the spaces between psychedelic pop, kosmische, minimalism, post-punk and electronic experiments. Now the shapeshifting London trio comes to Fasching with their new album Archives (out 2 October).

The band was founded by singer and multi-instrumentalist Cathy Lucas and today consists of Lucas, Susumu Mukai and Valentina Magaletti, one of the most distinctive and acclaimed drummers in avant-garde and experimental music. On Archives, the trio takes its collage-like way of working to the extreme. Lucas in rural France, Magaletti and Mukai in London, they send recordings, song fragments and ideas back and forth, listen back, cut apart and rebuild.

The music is chiselled out in a virtual studio, from a kind of shared nervous system. Nobody seems to know who’s playing what anymore: Magaletti might suddenly turn up on bass, Mukai behind the drums, and Lucas slip in with something else entirely. The result is music that keeps changing shape yet still hangs together: hypnotic rhythms, skewed details, psychedelic melodies and electronic textures in constant motion. As if someone took the Stereolab sound, chopped it to pieces and built a new mosaic from the bits.
