The Vijay Iyer Trio

Composer and pianist Vijay Iyer has carved out his own golden path in 21st century jazz music. His powerfully expressive language follows in the footsteps of past pianist-composer masters such as Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk to Alice Coltrane and Geri Allen but also to McCoy Tyner and Fela Kuti in the 70s with both West African and South Asian rhythm traditions.
Vijay Iyer has released twenty-six acclaimed albums, been nominated for a Grammy three times and composes for orchestras, soloists and chamber ensembles worldwide. Perhaps Iyer’s purest expression can be found in his acclaimed trio, the Vijay Iyer Trio, defined by The New York Times as “one of the best jazz bands.”
And of course it is. Together with one of the world’s absolute best double bassists Linda May Han Oh and the drummer and professor of contemporary music Tyshawn Sorey, the trio has released two records, Uneasy came in 2021 and Compassion was released this year, both on classic ECM.
This is how the New York Times puts it:
“It’s as if this band wants to both seduce you and discomfit you, stripping you of everything but the ability to think and see for yourself”.
Now the Vijay Iyer Trio is coming to Stockholm Jazz Festival and the audience at jazz club Fasching will have the chance to meet this almost telepathic world-class trio in its responsive, exuberant playing. On the drum chair this evening Jeremy Dutton, New York drummer and one of the sharpest of the younger generation we’ve seen along with people like Gerald Clayton, Keyon Harrold, Brandee Younger, Melissa Aldana and Tigran Hamasayan.
