It’s hard to overstate Hopeton Brown’s influence on the history of dub. Under the name Scientist, he twisted and sculpted soundscapes so powerful they still feel like music from the future. With his unmistakable signature of deep basslines, spacious echoes and hypnotic reverb, he redefined dub’s sonic landscape and inspired countless producers in his wake.

Scientist got his start as an apprentice at King Tubby’s legendary studio in Kingston in the late 1970s. Among the equipment on Dromilly Avenue, the young Scientist transformed the art of mixing. “Anyone who can do that must be a Scientist,” said King Tubby – and the name stuck.

During the 80s, Scientist went from disciple to master in his own right, with a string of groundbreaking albums recorded at Channel One and Tuff Gong. This February night at Fasching, the focus is on the 1981 classic Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires.

With equal parts scientific precision, raw explosiveness and a glint of humor, he takes tracks apart and rebuilds them from their components, dressing them in galactic echoes, planet-smashing bass and sharp drum hits that can wake both spirits and dance floors. A living legend from dub’s golden era brings one of his most beloved albums to life on stage!
