Bobo Stenson is one of Swedish jazz’s great international figures. His career spans decades, continents and collaborations with Stan Getz, Don Cherry and Charles Lloyd. Yet it may be in his own trio format that his piano playing comes most fully into its own.
Together with bassist Anders Jormin and drummer Jon Fält, he forms a trio whose chemistry has made them one of Europe’s most celebrated piano trios. Their most recent album Sphere (ECM, 2023) features interpretations of works by Scandinavian composers including Per Nørgård, Sven-Erik Bäck and Jean Sibelius, alongside original compositions by Jormin. Jazzwise described it as “a powerfully introspective album… with many moments of breathtaking lyrical beauty.” Johannes Cornell wrote: “Stenson, Jormin and Fält’s intuitive interplay and sound has a precedent in the Bill Evans Trio with Paul Motian and Scott LaFaro, but the question is whether any other piano trio has taken it to such heights.”
