A 73-year-old jazz giant joins a forward-thinking Danish guitarist and a Japanese ambient pioneer in a new line-up at Fasching in May.

Joe Lovano has been a central figure in modern jazz for more than four decades. The Grammy-winning saxophonist has moved freely between traditional post-bop and more open, experimental settings, in projects like Trio Tapestry. With Lovano, the old credentials matter less than his curiosity about the music, which is what keeps him current.

Jakob Bro has spent the years since his 2003 debut developing a hushed, finely detailed guitar style, with a strong feel for melody, tone and space. He has worked with Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell and Charles Lloyd, among others, but Paul Motian has been especially important to his music. In fact, Bro shares that connection to the legendary drummer with Lovano. Lovano played in Motian’s trio with Bill Frisell, and Bro joined the drummer’s trio early in his career. In 2022 they recorded Once Around the Room, a tribute to Motian.

The third voice in the trio is Midori Takada. The Japanese percussionist and composer has worked at the forefront of ambient and minimalist music since the 1980s, drawing on Western art music, improvisation, African drumming traditions and Indonesian gamelan. Her 1983 album Through the Looking Glass has become a landmark recording in minimalism and ambient.

An evening that ties jazz tradition to what comes next, with minimalism, improvisation and a taste for experiment played at the highest level.
