James Yorkston

Quietly spun singer-songwriter pop with a distinctive touch, rooted deep in Scottish storytelling. James Yorkston has released music on Domino Records for 25 years, building a catalogue where the everyday and the idiosyncratic sit side by side.

He broke through opening for Bert Jansch and John Martyn. Radiohead’s Phil Selway has praised his music, and John Peel once called him the finest songwriter of his generation. In recent years Yorkston has collaborated with Nina Persson of The Cardigans — together with The Second Hand, Yorkston/Persson played two acclaimed, sold-out shows at Fasching in 2023.

Since 2011 he has also published four books and pushed well beyond the singer-songwriter format through a string of collaborations. With bassist Jon Thorne and sarangi player Suhail Yusuf Khan he forms the trio Yorkston/Thorne/Khan, where Scottish folk runs into Indian classical music, jazz, krautrock and experimental sound. Rolling Stone called their album Neuk Wight Delhi All-Stars “a game-changing masterpiece.”

Now James Yorkston comes to Fasching for a solo evening drawing on 25 years of musical life — songs that are quiet, curious, and carry a melodic and narrative sense entirely his own.
