Leeds-based The Sorcerers draw their sound from the golden age of Ethiopian jazz — the underground scene of 1960s and 70s Addis Ababa. The result is modal, hypnotic and cinematically atmospheric: music that resists easy placement but invites deep listening.
Inspired by Mulatu Astatke and the legendary Éthiopiques compilations, the band move between cosmic library funk, spiritual jazz and soundtrack textures. Layered arrangements, swirling tones and grooves that pull you in. Mulatu Astatke heard them and asked for the CD. DistritoJazz called them “one of the most innovative groups in Ethio-jazz today.”
*The Sorcerers play at 23:00. You can choose to see just them — or come earlier and make it a full night. At 20:00, Swedish ethio-jazz/afrobeat/psychedelia/jazz band Langendorf United open the evening.
