Two concerts on one ticket! It’s a double dose of ethio-jazz as Langendorf United and The Sorcerers travel through 1960s and 70s Addis Ababa, with detours into psychedelia, Afrobeat and spiritual jazz.
At 20:00, Lina Langendorf’s award-winning Stockholm collective opens the evening. With musicians from Tonbruket, Fire!, Wildbirds and Peacedrums and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, the band moves freely between spiritual jazz, fiery Afrobeat and hard-edged psychedelia. Debut album Yeahno Yowouw Land (2023) made Songlines Magazine’s top 10; follow-up Undercover Beast earned 4/5 from Dagens Nyheter and a perfect 10/10 from Truth & Lies Music Magazine. SVT Kulturnyheterna described the sound as one that “brims with energy and ideas and blows most things out of the water – playful and boundless.”
At 23:00, Leeds outfit The Sorcerers take over. Drawing from the golden age of ethio-jazz, they push it in modal, hypnotic and cinematic directions – a meeting of cosmic library funk, spiritual jazz and film-score atmospherics. Mulatu Astatke heard them and asked for the record. DistritoJazz called them “one of the most innovative groups in Ethio-jazz today.”
