Charif Megarbane has been called a globetrotter of sound. With his self-coined concept of Lebrary music, he builds sonic bridges between 1960s Italian library music, Middle Eastern psychedelia, Afrobeat, Somali pop, and hip-hop breaks. All filtered through a DIY ethos and a modern sensibility.
His instrumentals pull listeners into a kaleidoscopic world where fuzz-drenched Blaxploitation guitar riffs meet West African funk grooves, Lebanese bellydance psych, and vintage European film melodies, all reimagined into something uniquely his own. It’s a sound defined by groove-stalgia where the past and future pulse together.
On his latest album Hawalat (Habibi Funk, 2024), an ancient informal money transfer system becomes the metaphor for a musical exchange: a circuit of sound flowing between places, people, and generations. The album features Sahra Gure, FloFilz, and Sweden’s own Sven Wunder. To mark the occasion, Sven Wunder will also join as DJ with a carefully curated set of analog warmth and global sonic gems.
With over 100 albums behind him and creative roots spanning Beirut, Nairobi, Paris and Lisbon, Charif Megarbane is a master of music in motion through time, rhythm and geography.
