Copenhagen-based ML Buch is one of the leading figures in the much-talked-about indie scene that has grown out of the Danish capital in recent years — the kind that makes us cast (reluctantly!) envious glances across the Øresund strait. Here, dreamy ’80s pop meets futuristic sound textures and electronic experimentation in music that’s as immediate as it is full of bite.

In Buch’s musical world, compositions emerge in an almost architectural way. She generates raw material through playing, tweaking and assembling, leaving room for chance and intuition to shape the final form. 7-string electric guitars in open tunings meet synthetic instruments, electronic layers and crystalline melodies. The result is a kind of art-pop where the familiar keeps slipping away, making room for something stranger.

Her latest full-length, Suntub (2023), was described by Pitchfork as a shift from the electronic soundscapes of Skinned toward sparkling guitars and rock drums, carrying traces of everything from Roxy Music and shoegaze to ’90s indie.

Buch has performed at Roskilde Festival, Pitchfork Paris and Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, performed as part of Laurie Anderson’s Talking Choir, and collaborated with artists including Astrid Sonne, CTM and poet Ingvild Lothe. Now, one of Copenhagen’s most distinctive voices comes to Fasching.
