Momoko Gill has long been one of British jazz’s best-kept secrets. A self-taught drummer, producer and vocalist, she has shaped her sound through collaborations with Alabaster DePlume, Matthew Herbert, Coby Sey and Tirzah — but it is on her debut album Momoko (Strut, 2026) that she steps into the spotlight entirely on her own terms for the first time.
Raised in Japan and the US, now based in London, Gill draws from spiritual jazz, retro-inflected soul and contemporary electronica. Momoko was self-produced, recorded at Total Refreshment Centre and mixed by Matthew Herbert. MOJO awarded it four stars; UNCUT called it “an album full of quiet storms that grow louder with close listening”.
From jazz-infused grooves and quiet piano ballads to skewed beat structures and dark trip-hop echoes. Running through the album is Gill’s understated but distinct voice — layer upon layer of harmonies binding the organic and the electronic together.
