Ambient textures, vivid melodies and a musical presence you can almost touch. Danish trio Hvalfugl blend piano, guitar and double bass into something greater than its individual parts.
Since their 2017 debut, the Aarhus-based Jonathan Fjord Bredholt (piano, harmonium), Jeppe Lavsen (guitar) and Anders Juel Bomholt (double bass) have established themselves as one of Denmark’s most distinctive instrumental groups, with a sound that moves freely between genres. Elegant piano figures and spherical harmonic textures weave together with crystalline guitar themes and melodies that unfold slowly, layer by layer. With three albums behind them — By (2017), Som En Faldskærm (2019) and Øjeblikke Vi Husker (2020) — and the collected double LP Bag Vore Øjne Strømmer Drømme Sagte Forbi (2025), they have consistently expanded their sound without losing the intimate core that defines them.
Live, they draw the audience into a Hvalfugl universe of warm acoustic timbres and subtle electronics — an elusive live energy that earned them the Årets Livenamn (Live Act of the Year) award at DMA Jazz 2025.
