Drummer and producer Sarathy Korwar lets rhythm carry both musical energy and political meaning. His sound blends Indian folk traditions, jazz, electronics and spoken word into a constantly shifting mix moving between club spaces, collectives and protest.
With his new album There Is Beauty, There Already he steps straight into the innermost room of percussion. The record is a forty-minute suite of improvisations where drums, tabla, ghatam, marimba and Buchla textures melt into one another. Recorded at Real World Studios with three fellow percussionists, it builds on a single recurring rhythmic figure that the ensemble circles until it opens and transforms.
