Asher Gamedze is not just a drummer: he’s a thinker, an activist, and one of South Africa’s most influential jazz voices today. Rooted in Cape Town’s music and protest culture, he has developed a sound where free improvisation meets African tradition and every rhythm carries political weight.
His debut album Dialectic Soul (2020) was hailed by The New York Times as one of the year’s best, followed by Turbulence and Pulse (2023), described by All About Jazz as “a magnificent, gutsy, stirring piece of work, authentic to its core.”
With his Another Time Ensemble, Gamedze continues to explore the potential of jazz as a tool for transformation. Each concert becomes a journey through time, history, and resistance, but also a collective act.
His drumming is both grounded and free, drawing influence from masters like Elvin Jones and Rashied Ali, yet always carried by a distinctly South African pulse.
