Marta Sanchez Trio

Twice, the New York Times has ranked Marta Sánchez’s albums among the best records of the year — across all genres. Last year, she was named DownBeat’s Rising Star Pianist of the Year.

Born in Madrid, long based in New York, and currently a member of the David Murray Quartet, Sánchez is one of the most celebrated composers working in American jazz today. On Perpetual Void (four and a half stars, DownBeat), her piano playing emerges with what writer Lauren du Graf describes as “cinematic clarity” — an album of dynamic compositions that show what the trio format can hold under Sánchez’s direction: close interplay, shifting harmony, music continuously reshaped by the players performing it.

“Perpetual Void is built with imaginative new pulses, polyrhythmic allure, and enveloping harmonic waves that make an impact on the listener. You’ll find a lot to connect with,” wrote Jazztrail in their review of the album.

At Fasching, she performs in trio with bassist Kanoa Mendelhall and drummer Mark Whitfield Jr.
