Giovanni Hidalgo grew up in a house full of drums in Puerto Rico and started playing congas at three years old. A lot has happened since. He’s toured with Dizzy Gillespie, played on Jerry Garcia’s record, been a driving force in both Batacumbele and Planet Drum – and along the way changed how percussionists everywhere think about the instrument.
Hidalgo is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost congueros, playing with a freedom that recalls an improvising horn player more than a traditional percussionist. Modern Drummer named him winner of their Readers Poll in 2023.
In the trio, he’s joined by pianist Marcio Garcia and bassist Myles Sloniker, two musicians rooted in jazz, Latin and fusion. Note that this concert is rescheduled from April 9 – welcome back.
