Belonging 50 years – Paulsberg/Hulbækmo/Fiske/Storaas

The ECM classic Belonging was recorded over two days in April 1974 and launched Keith Jarrett’s Scandinavian quartet with Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson, and Jon Christensen. Fifty years on, Norwegian saxophonist Hanna Paulsberg and three of the country’s finest jazz musicians take on the material.

The project began as a commission for the Oslo Jazz Festival 2024, playing to sold-out houses and glowing reviews. “To my ears, this material represents a high point in her already brilliant career,” wrote Nettavisen after the premiere. Paulsberg inhabits the weighty repertoire without trying to fill Garbarek’s shoes, finding her own angles and entry points instead. At Fasching, the quartet brings an expanded version of the project – one that covers the full breadth of Jarrett’s Scandinavian quartet.
