Asher Gamedze is more than a drummer: he’s a thinker, an activist, and one of South Africa’s most compelling jazz voices today. Rooted in Cape Town’s rich musical and protest culture, his sound fuses free improvisation with African traditions, each rhythm carrying profound political resonance.
His debut album Dialectic Soul (2020) was hailed by The New York Times as one of the year’s best, followed by Turbulence and Pulse (2023), described by All About Jazz as “a magnificent, gutsy, stirring piece of work, authentic to its core.”
With his Another Time Ensemble, Gamedze continues to explore jazz as a collective act and a tool for transformation. Each performance becomes a conversation, between musicians, between movements, between listeners.
His drumming is both deeply rooted and openly searching. Influenced by masters like Elvin Jones and Rashied Ali, but always carried by an undeniable South African pulse, he shapes music that is as physical as it is intellectual.
