Loraine James makes music that sounds like it’s thinking in real time. It hesitates, takes detours, loses its thread and finds its way back. Her tracks borrow shapes from IDM, drill, ambient, math rock and R&B, but it’s always the feeling that leads. Raised on the Alma Estate in northeast London, with her mother’s record collection full of calypso, metal and pop as her compass, she started at the piano before discovering the world of production through MIDI and laptop.
Since her debut Detail (2017), she has refined her sound across three acclaimed albums for Hyperdub – For You & I, Reflection and Gentle Confrontation – blending experimental electronics with honest storytelling. She has interpreted iconic composer Julius Eastman, collaborated with Iceboy Violet and TSVI, and built open, genre-free spaces where Black, queer and British identity can take shape on its own terms.
Live, she’s understated but instantly captivating – present rather than controlling. A concert where feeling leads the way, together with Fyn Dobson. Part of the concert series LOKKO X FASCHING.
